A&O’s key determining factor is that it always puts the patient first, listens to the specialist treating the patient and provides the service or product to meet their needs. Each day it aims to get better. Ashok’s journey towards becoming chairman of A&O began with 10 years work within a hospital environment as a clinical biochemist. This allowed him to maintain a patient-focused approach to everything that he does. Ashok’s departure from the hospital led him to diagnostics company, Helena BioSciences, that strengthened Alpha &Omega UK Ltd (A&O) acts as the profile company for Ciconia Recovery and Gluon Pharma which are key providers in the healthcare sector. Its key goal is to treat patients who have substance dependency and/or psychiatric issues. CEOMonthly has recognised the company’s chair, Dr Ashok Kumar within its Chairperson Awards 2021. We take a closer look at the company and Ashok’s career. his approach to work with an innovative team developing new ways of providing key solutions to the healthcare sector. This sparked his interest in novel approaches, he then went on to work with a number of multi-national organisations including Organon before partnering and setting up his first pharmaceutical organisation. Ashok was always involved in making sure key treatments were made available to the NHS and in an affordable manner. A&O was formed, and Ashok steered it towards an international focus to provide essential healthcare to countries facing difficult circumstances, logistics, revolutions, war and lack of funds, humanitarian approach etc. During this time, Ashok became aware of the lack of treatments available for drug and alcohol dependency and started to explore potential solutions. This led to starting and expanding a number of rehabilitation clinics and a research and development pharma operation looking into novel treatments and delivery systems for successful intervention. We asked Ashok how he goes about leading his team. He said, “With strong leadership and the passionate people that work towards a single goal, the results are enormous. This is why we continue to collaborate with other strategic healthcare partners that can help expand our mutual goals. I follow a leadership role that is based around emotional intelligence, not only from our own organisation but also from our patients and clinicians. I believe you should always lead by example and as such I operate an open-door policy that no matter what the issue, I always find time to understand and help find a solution. Starting with the right mix, making the right decisions and ensuring the safety of our team and of the environment. We place strong emphasis on integrity and efficacy. We ensure that our integrity is reflected in our products, in our collaboration, in our pricing and in our leadership.” Ashok also shared that there are numerous projects upcoming for A&O, especially regarding the treatment of alcohol and drug dependency, and the aim is for them to be delivered this year. His own career options are clearly defined, too; he has taken up a variety of other roles and works with a clinical trials organisation in the USA as an advisor and as part of their scientific advisory board. Additionally, Ashok is now working with key pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies to ensure they have a solid and robust international strategy to supply medicines right across the globe. This has also led to the opportunity to work on a governmental project to ensure they find the right partners for the provision of diagnostic testing and supply of essential medication for COVID-19 treatment.
