Chairperson Awards 2022

CEO MONTHLY / Chairperson Awards 2022 22 Mar22259 Pioneering Geospatial Technology CEO of the Year 2022: Joseph Hlady Lux Modus is a technology start-up focused on bringing 3D imaging and mapping to the masses. Its clients are infrastructure owners and operators, who will benefit immensely from reduced time and budgets and increased safety by having geographically accurate 3D images and maps of their assets. To date, the infrastructure and asset management industries have been relatively slow to adopt 3D mapping and digital twin creation because of the cost, time, and expertise required – Lux Modus is changing this paradigm by providing automated mapping technology at a low cost that is easy to use and produces highly accurate, real-time feedback. CEO, Joseph Hlady is the spearhead of the company, who, with vast experience and great ambition is on the road to taking this start-up far. We got in touch with Joseph to learn more about the company and his career. Joseph Hlady’s career began in the engineering and construction industry for major global firms, which afforded him the opportunity to work on huge infrastructure projects around the world and gain an understanding of the challenges experienced by customers during design, engineering, construction, and operations of infrastructure assets. Early on, Joseph and others in the geospatial industry realised that companies were not leveraging the geospatial data they had available in order to improve their projects and assets. He tells us, “I am very grateful that I got to work with likeminded geospatial experts and have managers and mentors who saw the future of geospatial technology for infrastructure projects. I know many were not as fortunate as I was. Thanks to the mentors I had, I was given more and more responsibility and opportunities. In particular, I was given the opportunity to lead geospatial departments and learn the business side of the infrastructure development and operations market.” With this experience, Joseph was able to branch out on his own about ten years ago and begin to invest in geospatial start-ups, where he learned about the success and failures of start-ups before going on to found Lux Modus. Joseph says, “Looking back on it, I really recognise how lucky I was to gain experience in both the technology and business part of the geospatial and infrastructure industries. As well as to be given the opportunities to participate in the business aspects of the firms I was working in. This scenario is something I am striving to create in Lux Modus as we continue to grow. As a ground-breaking technology company, I see an opportunity for Lux to be a fertile ground where the next generation of geospatial entrepreneurs can grow.” Thus, Joseph leads his team with dynamicity, adjusting his leadership style to suit each individual’s working style as they grow and find themselves within the company. His teammates work hard and they are resilient, which he is grateful for as he has found that good people are hard to come by when recruiting for a start-up company. Joseph shares, “I know it’s cliché to say, but in a start-up, you have to stick to it and believe in yourself and your team. Being the cheerleader of your company takes a lot of time and effort and consumes a lot of mental and emotional energy. But you have to do it. If you do it right, your teammembers become cheerleaders, too. It can be hard to get through the tough times as a start-up, but with the right team, you get through it.” With its great network of team members and investors, Lux Modus has received and been able to take on many great opportunities, with Joseph saying, “As the leader, this has had a profound impact on my ability to move the company forward. And having early financial success has allowed me to focus more on team building and commercialisation than others might have the chance to do.” Now, Joseph and his team are changing the face of the geospatial industry, priding themselves in selling solutions, not just hardware. Unlike competitors who are focused on selling expensive hardware to a select group of data collectors, the Lux Modus team sells more affordable technology solutions to the end customer. As a result, more companies are gaining access to such technology that they thought was out of reach for them. Overall, the teammembers value the relationships they form with customers and are highly motivated to help them succeed from the outset, rather than just meeting corporate sales targets. They strive to understand their clients’ obstacles and objectives. Joseph comments, “We have yet to meet a customer who only wants to see our product data set and our rates. Every single customer appreciates our interest in their challenges.” Looking towards the future, Lux Modus hopes to one day become the preeminent 3D mapping technology company in the world. The plan is to grow organically as well as through acquisitions to completely dominate the 3D mapping technology space. Excitingly, it has several large projects underway in order to lay the foundation for dominance in this market space – And we at CEO Monthly are truly rooting for its success!
