CEO MONTHLY / Female CEO of the Year Awards 2023 18 Audiology MD of the Year 2023 (UK): Sarah-Jane Brown After many years working in audiology, in 2019 Sarah-Jane Brown founded her own independent firm, the SJB Hearing Company, in the Oxfordshire area. Sarah-Jane has an essential understanding of the repercussions hearing loss can have on individual clients, their family, and friends. Hearing loss can be traumatic for people, who fear they will miss out on the fun of social events, and the ability to share moments of laughter with their family. Sarah-Jane is able to take a holistic approach to hearing care, and will work with clients to find the very best system for them to suit their own lives and needs. The SJB Hearing Company’s objective is to support its valued client base with outstanding service levels, and promote wellbeing across the board. It offers cutting edge diagnostic assessments for customers, to pinpoint their hearing problems, and can prescribe state-ofthe-art hearing technology solutions that will help to enable everyone to hear to the very best of their ability. The hearing assessment services on offer are for persons aged 18 and over, but the company also provides general ear care advice and wax management services for anyone over the age of 2. Sarah-Jane has vast theoretical and practical experience within the hearing industry, which has been gained from the NHS, private practice work, and via her studies. Her experiences include time spent working on a Neuro Rehabilitation ward, and as a technician within an audiology department. She possesses a foundation degree (with distinction) in hearing aid audiology, gained from Aston University in 2015. Following which she began working in Oxfordshire, with a particular focus on the Banbury area. Although the hearing industry has traditionally been a very male dominated realm, it is gratifying to see that improvements are steadily being made in this regard. Sarah-Jane is delighted to report that she has noticed a huge difference in young women achieving success in the sector, and is pleased to see, just over the last 5 years, more female audiologists setting up independent clinics of their own. It is also refreshing to see this change filtering through to the commercial side of the industry, with more female audiologists assuming leading roles within some of the industry’s largest corporations. The SJB Hearing Company is proud to have been honoured with numerous awards, and is particularly delighted to be supported by its patients so wholeheartedly. These are the things that Sarah-Jane truly feels are the biggest achievements in her career because she was always determined to create a familyfeel practice. Being able to combine this with the pinnacle of aftercare service, and promote the best technology in the industry is hugely satisfying. The company has received a number of positive comments testifying to this, such as from P.F., who writes, “Sarah-Jane is a skilled practitioner who inspires confidence. I had not had the best experiences with ear wax removal over the last couple of years, but Sarah-Jane quickly diagnosed what the problem was and completely cleared both ears.” On a similar note, W.M. simply comments, “Perfect service, very polite and professional, thank you”. Sarah-Jane’s caring side is something that is integral to her character, and was only further developed during her time working in the NHS. She treats every single individual who comes into her practice as important, and fully concentrates on them during their appointment. As she puts it herself, “Every ounce of my energy goes into helping them to hear better.” It is most gratifying to see how far Sarah-Jane has progressed when as a young woman she often felt challenged by older men who were already wellestablished within the industry. She felt as though she wasn’t always taken seriously, and so had more to prove. Looking to the future, SarahJane has ambitions to actively support people who find themselves in the same position as she once was herself. She is hoping to develop a programme with local schools and colleges that provides advice for groups and individuals about the options available to them. Having never thought it would be possible to attend university, let alone own her own business by the age of 30, she is eager to open young students eyes to what they can pursue and achieve. Having been recognised as the Audiology MD of the Year 2023 (UK): Sarah-Jane Brown, we are delighted to see her dedication being rewarded. After all, she has already helped improve the lives of many thousands of patients and their loved ones, and will no doubt continue to help many more in the fullness of time.
