CEO MONTHLY / GLOBAL CEO EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2023 29 Professor Luc Soler, Visible Patient CEO, Medical Technology CEO of the year 2O23 France “I’m like a fish in water in an operating theatre,” explains Luc Soler. He had dreamt of becoming a surgeon since the age of 5! After two years studying medicine and an internship in paediatric surgery, which confirmed his passion, he failed the competitive examination. To bounce back, he chose computer science, his hobby, which he studied in Tours (France) and then in Paris at the École des Hautes Études en Informatique, graduating top of his class in 1994. In his Master’s degree, he discovered an option that matched his dream: medical computing, and wrote a thesis combining these two worlds. At the end of his thesis, Professor Jacques Marescaux, founder of IRCAD (Research Institute against Digestive Cancer), offered him a position as R&D Director. In 1999 he wrote the Medic@ project, which was to become Visible Patient: the first online medical image analysis laboratory to provide surgeons with a 3D digital clone of their patient’s organs and pathologies. The Visible Patient company was founded in 2013. 10 years on, still under the leadership of Professor Luc Soler, and with a team of 49 employees, this French start-up is one of the leaders in the field of e-health. The many technological innovations of its teams in virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence are enabling surgeons to find previously inaccessible therapeutic solutions. Saving lives is a motivation that has never left Luc Soler and his team. Over the last 3 years, Visible Patient has accelerated its development by increasing its workforce, signing a partnership with Johnson&Johnson and obtaining more than 20 patents in numerous countries. The awards and recognition received over the last 12 months are a perfect illustration of the incredible diversity of the company’s applications and innovations. - Award from the FORCE Foundation for its 3D modelling project of endometriosis. - “E-Health Talent” Award in the citizen application category of the French Agence du Numérique en Santé for its 3D heart modelling project for young children in link with the French Association Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque. - “Check Up Santé” Grand Prize in the e-Health category. - Winner French A.I.
