A driven entrepreneur boasting worldwide experiences, Pieter Hack has focused his entire career on scaling up and implementing environmental and energy technology. In 1983, Pieter earned a degree in Environmental Technology and Water Treatment from the Agricultural University of Applied Sciences Wageningen, now known as Wageningen University & Research. Following this, he began as a process engineer at PAQUES BV, developing and designing anaerobic wastewater treatment plants for the domestic market through turnkey projects, as well as exporting process designs and key-components for plants. In 1997, Pieter joined MAGNETO, a manufacturer of titanium anodes. He then acquired this company from the founder in 2000 and created a Chinese sister company in 2007 to reach both the European and Asian markets. In 2016, he then sold both companies to EVOQUA and remained onboard for almost three years to ensure seamless integration. During this period, Pieter was also the main founder of REDstack, established in 2005. Pieter then acquired Pure Water Group from its founder in 2021, with the aim of growing the company through the addition of technologies, products, and markets to the business. In 2022, Pieter made the strategic decision to partner REDstack and Pure Water Best Sustainable Technology CEO 2024 (Netherlands): Pieter Hack As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, there has been a rise in demand for companies committed to ensuring a healthier, sustainable future. His vast experience within the industry has well-equipped Pieter to steer the partnership towards success. He leverages his expertise and understanding of the market to make strategic decisions and instil longevity into his relationships. “I prefer to work in small organisations, with an open culture,” Pieter tells us. “I prefer to work with clients in a long-lasting relationship, to supply dedicated process units for application in the plants of our clients. Not just one-offs, but ongoing, repeat business with multiple projects. As being a process engineer by education, I do my best to understand both the technical and commercial needs and wishes of our clients, trying to offer the most suitable solutions.” Pieter’s expertise has been advantageous for the business, especially in the face of industry challenges that arise. Many developments within energy transition are slower than Pieter hopes for; political decisions cannot be predicted and are at many times inconsistent. In response, Pieter has had to adjust the company’s strategy and focus several times. This includes adjusting, delaying, cancelling, or speeding up development projects as appropriate. Despite these challenges, the future is prosperous for the business. “We are very busy,” says Pieter, “designing and building innovative process units for our clients, based on the successful development work and pilot studies we’ve done over the last few years. I am looking forward to multiple implementations of our technologies and systems in markets such as hydrogen production, ammonium recovery, carbon capture, sustainable power generation, and water desalination.” As for his own career, Pieter tells us that he plans to continue using his gained experience to develop businesses and grow his teams within the companies. It takes a high level of dedication and resilience to succeed in this industry, qualities that Pieter displays by the tenfold. It is for this steadfast commitment to innovation and excellence that Pieter has been recognised as the Best Sustainable Technology CEO 2024 – Netherlands.
