CEO Monthly Issue 5 2018
12 CEO MONTHLY / ISSUE 5 2018 , Cool Clean Technologies was founded in 2001 byMr. JonWikstrom, whose military and civilian career included the development of many CO 2 based applications for manufacturing process improvement. We profiled bothMr. Wikstromand Cool Clean Technologies as we discoveredmore about their innovative ways. Jon Wikstrom is One ‘ Cool ’ CEO Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) technology was originally designed to complement the aerospace industry for precision cleaning, but new applications for this innovative technology are ever-evolving. Various industries have adopted CO 2 technology as it gives them advantages over traditional methods. Cool Clean has developed and marketed a variety of CO 2 based technologies, and have many systems placed throughout the United States, Mexico, Asia and Europe. Today, Cool Clean’s CO 2 technology is used in many industries and applications such as automotive paint pre-treatment, medical device manufacturing, composites machining for aerospace, and electronics component manufacturing. Specifically, Cool Clean’s technology is being used to clean over 80% of Hard Disk Drive’s (HDD’s) manufactured in the world. The reason that CO 2 technology is beneficial to manufacturing processes is because of its ease of use. CO 2 cleaning can be automated immediately into a process and retrofits to any robotics, greatly saving on space requirements. Beyond ease of use, CO 2 technology is more effective compared to traditional aqueous and manual cleaning processes because of three important attributes: 1). Dry - Parts removed from the system come out clean and dry. 2). Generate Zero Byproducts - No waste disposal required. 3). Eco-Friendly & Environmentally Safe - Doesn’t contribute to greenhouse gases. Cool Clean systems are a user and not a producer of carbon dioxide. The process uses environmentally recycled CO 2 , like what is used to carbonate soft drinks and media of fire extinguishers. As a recognised world leader in the design and manufacturing of CO 2 based technologies, Cool Clean uses recycled CO 2 in all phases for cleaning, surface preparation, machine tool cooling, and selective extraction. CO 2 cleaning is a waterless solution used by customers to replace aqueous and solvent based cleaning operations. As technology has advanced, performance requirements and complexity of precision instruments has increased. Cool Clean has stayed ahead of this curve by continually providing state-of-the-art CO 2 cleaning products that are environmentally friendly and eliminate the use of deionised water, chemicals, and waste agents. “Our innovative technology cleans using either solid or liquid phase carbon dioxide to remove particulate matter and light oils,” explains Jon Wikstrom. Another function of Cool Clean’s CO 2 technology is related to dry machining or machining without oil and water-based coolant. Machining using CO 2 cooling focuses a blast of cool CO 2 particles enabling the tool to remain at near ambient temperature, which increases tool life and cutting speeds compared to traditional machine coolants. 1805CE06 Lastly, CO 2 extraction technology is improving the way oils and other contamination are extracted from medical, botanical, and silicone applications. CO 2 extraction systems effectively extract oils without added solvents making the process more human friendly, energy efficient and consistent in terms of quality. Cool Clean Technologies continues to be the global leader in CO 2 technology solutions and much of that innovation and aggressive approach is due to the President and CEO, Mr. Jon Wikstrom.
