CEO Monthly Issue 8 2018

CEO MONTHLY / ISSUE 8 2018 9 , A &G Central Music began as a small musical instrument repair company. Recently, we profiled the firm to discover the secrets behind their exceptional success. Sound of Success Founded in 1968, A & G Central Music began as a small musical instrument repair company. In the ensuing fifty years, they have rapidly grown to a multi- location full service music retailer and wholesaler. The firm’s primary focus is on creating the opportunity for children to explore music making through school- based music programs and private, store-based classes. Robert Christie has worked as a performing musician and as an educator, and still does a bit of both. Initially, Robert began his current career by helping out in a local orchestral instrument shop. Having gained some experience and making contacts in the field, he began to see where the needs of our musical community were being underserved. At the same time, he was introduced to the proprietor of A & G Central Music. She was looking to retire and saw the business as a base on which to build a company serving the needs he’d identified in his previous position. A deal was made 11 years ago, and Robert purchased Central Music. Good business is the confluence of opportunity and preparation. As such, the firm are focused on being positioned to take advantage when they identify an opportunity. They approach all their relationships with the idea that they are going to create a great experience for everyone involved. This holds true for their clients, suppliers, and employees alike. Intention is powerful, so they train themselves to be ever mindful of their vision and values. Currently, the musical products and services industry is strong in the U.S. Obviously, the retail sector is facing the same challenges that all retail businesses currently face. There’s also downward pressure on pricing/profits due the wide availability of cheaply made imported goods. By focusing on creating great experiences for their clients they overcome some of the pressure from online only sellers. They have also positioned themselves as experts in their field. By doing so, the firm are able to turn clients away from cheaply priced low-quality goods. Trust is a currency they have in abundance. Moving forward, Robert believes that success looks a lot like what they are currently accomplishing. As such, he wants to see Central Music continue to create opportunity for young people and be an important contributor to the musical community.
